Fermented Rice Water

Fermented Rice Water – The Secret to Hair Fall-Free Days!

Don’t we love trying home remedies when it comes to hair fall? Rice is one such remedy that is beneficial not just for your hair but also for your body. And it is super-efficient to help fight hair fall too. It is considered by many to be the best hair fall treatment for your hair. Let’s read more about how it was discovered to be the best hair fall remedy and how to include it in our lifestyle!

Rice water has featured in so many pro-tip guides for hair health since a very long time. The trend was started in Japan where women would wash their floor-length hair in rice water to make it grow more and keep it healthy. Similar patterns of hair care were also observed in China where women would use rice water for hair growth and to avoid greying of hair.

Rice water is the best way to pamper your hair. It keeps your hair clean and boosts hair growth. It is proven to be a perfect solution for all your hair fall worries. However, people often confuse rice water with fermented rice water.

How Similar are Rice Water and Fermented Rice Water?

You might find that rice water and fermented rice water sound similar. However, fermented rice water is said to be more beneficial for your hair. Fermented rice water contains more antioxidants which help your hair with dead and damaged cells. But what exactly is rice water and fermented rice water made of? Of course, it is made of rice! However, there is a process to prepare it. Rice water is made when you cook rice and take out the starch. Fermented rice water is made when this rice starch (or rice water) is kept aside for some time and allowed to ferment or turn sour. Sour rice water is fermented rice water. Now that we are talking about rice water and fermented rice water, let’s dig a little deeper to find out their benefits!

Elixir for Your Hair? Did You Mean, Fermented Rice Water?

Fermented rice water is considered to be the best remedy for all types of hair and their diverse range of hair problems. It is found to have a lot of benefits and is used in a lot of beauty products because it has an endless list of benefits. Here are a few of them.

● Vitamin-rich:

Fermented rice water is found to have vitamins B, C, E and contains a lot of minerals which are very important for your hair growth. It provides nourishment to your hair and improves their overall health too.

● Repairs damaged cells:

The protein content in rice helps to strengthen and repair damaged hair. This gives you beautiful locks that look shiny and feel soft.

● Reduces hair fall:

Fermented rice water helps to replenish the necessary proteins and keratin in your hair, thus helping you to increase the growth rate of your hair. What’s more? It also helps reduce hair fall, due to the added protein boost your hair receives, making it more flexible and stronger.

● Perfect pH level:

Another reason to use fermented rice water is its pH level. The pH level of rice water is slightly harsh on your hair. However, the fermentation process helps reduce its pH level, making it suitable for nourishing your hair and penetrating the strands to provide the right vitamins.

● Antioxidants:

Fermented rice water has anti-oxidants that work the best on damaged cells and hair. It is, therefore, an important component to make your hair shine brighter for longer! It also makes your hair stronger and ensures you are able to detangle your hair oh-so-easily!

So are there any specific steps to follow while using fermented rice water? Yes, there is a right way of using fermented rice water so that it does not burn your hair or stick to it making it difficult to clean.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation Explained: What Is Exfoliation and Why Your Skin needs it?

Ever wondered why a baby’s skin is so soft? It’s because babies naturally replace their skin cells every few days. As you grow older, however, the rate of cell turnover slows down dramatically. Dead cells on your skin’s surface hang around much longer, a fact that tends to accentuate those fine lines and can make your complexion look dull and lifeless. By removing these dead skin cells, exfoliating your skin—whether physically with scrubs or chemically using acids or enzymes—helps make up for the gradual slowing down of your natural skin-renewal process, improving the tone and texture of your skin.
Here are some of the reasons why you need to exfoliate your skin regularly:

The 5 Key Benefits of Exfoliation

• It fades age spots by removing dead skin cells containing the pigment.

• It unclogs pores and allows the release of natural skin oils.

• It minimizes pore size and superficial scars.

• It makes fine lines and wrinkles look less visible because the newly exposed layer of skin reflects light better.

• It allows better absorption of moisturizers, antioxidants and collagen-boosting serums by removing the top layer of dead and damaged cells. This also holds true for acne medications and other types of skin treatments for which penetration is important. This is another reason why regular exfoliation should be part of a basic skin care regimen.

What Type of Exfoliant Should You Use?

There are two ways to exfoliate your skin: chemical exfoliation, which uses acids or enzymes to remove dead skin cells, and physical exfoliation, which utilizes a hard substance to manually remove the dead skin cells—think microdermabrasion. As a general rule of thumb, acne-prone and highly sensitive skin responds very well to chemical exfoliants as they are less likely to cause irritation. But one can certainly use both a physical and chemical exfoliant  with one another and benefit greatly from both, but it would be absolutely recommended not to use both on the same day to avoid over exfoliation.

What Are Chemical Exfoliants

If you prefer a chemical exfoliant, among the most common types are alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). Both AHAs and BHA work by combining with the structural lipids in your stratum corneum (the outermost layer of your skin) and dissolving them so that the dead skin cells break away.

1.Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

They are among the most common types of light chemical peels. The AHA family of acids is derived from natural sources, such as fruit, milk or sugar. Two of the most widely used in skin care products today are glycolic acid (made from sugar) and lactic acid (made from milk). AHA-based facial exfoliators are an excellent choice for people with oily skin.

2.Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA)

Like the AHAs, they are a light chemical peel. In general, BHA is a more effective treatment for acne-prone skin. BHA (also called salicylic acid), is a synthetic derivative that comes from the same source as aspirin.

  1. Enzymes

However, if you have very sensitive skin, it is often recommended to look for facial exfoliants that are enzyme-based. These enzymes come from a natural source, like fruits, and work in the same way as acid-based but in a much slower pace, so it allows for an extremely safe and gentle exfoliating process.

What Are Physical Exfoliants

If you prefer a physical exfoliant, the best product for you depends upon the thickness and sensitivity of your skin. It’s important to remember that all kinds of particles can be used for exfoliation, and mainstream products encompass a wide and varied selection.

• Larger Granules

People with oilier complexions have larger sebaceous glands, which makes their skin thicker and better able to tolerate larger, more abrasive particles, such as pumice or magnesium oxide crystals.

• Smaller Granules

Those with drier, sensitive skin should generally use products with smaller granules, such as ruby crystals and jojoba beads. Jojoba beads, derived from the seeds of the jojoba plant, are small and uniform in size and shape so they are less likely to irritate, cut or abrade your skin. This lessens the likelihood of small skin tears.

• Seeds and Crushed Nutshells

It’s important to realize that certain ingredients, although natural, may not be appropriate for your skin type. Some natural products, such as crushed nutshells, seashells, ground fruit pits and seeds, have uneven edges and irregular shapes that can damage sensitive skin. The best exfoliating scrub is the one that effectively removes your stratum corneum but, at the same time, is gentle to the rest of your skin.

There’s no doubt that regular exfoliation is absolutely essential to maintaining smooth skin and keeping wrinkles and discoloration at bay. Exfoliation is the base of all healthy-looking skin.

We at Skinsense offer a variety of exfoliation treatments that can be done at the clinic and also at home.

Vitamin D

What Is Vitamin D?

Our gut (via diet) and skin (via sunlight) are the two main sources of vitamin D, which is made in two forms—vitamin D3 in the skin and D2 and D3 in the gut—both of which are further adequate sunlight exposure and poor diet are two of the most common reasons for vitamin D deficiency.

“Someone’s ability to manufacture vitamin D also depends on a person’s skin type (color), sex, BMI, physical activity, alcohol intake.
The average (non-deficient) adult should aim for 600 (IU) per day in their diet.
Look to fortified foods like milk as well as salmon, eggs, and mushrooms as great food sources.

But can a vitamin D deficiency affect your skin? As it turns out, because vitamin D deficiency is associated with poor immune function, increased inflammation, and decreased insulin sensitivity, but its deficiency can negatively impact the skin. “Poor immune function weakens the skin barrier, increasing dryness and chance of infections. Increased inflammation can worsen inflammatory conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea.

Vitamin D is available in an oral supplement form for those who are deficient, in prescription topical forms to treat inflammatory conditions, and is even found in some over-the-counter beauty products, like oils and moisturizers.

Benefits of Vitamin D for Skin

The chief function of vitamin D is maintaining a calcium balance in our bodies, but it also has functions well beyond this—for instance, the role it plays in skin health.

• Decreases inflammation: “The most important practical use of Vitamin D in the skin to date is as a mild-to-moderate anti-inflammatory, used clinically as a cream in the treatment of conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo

• Protects the skin: Vitamin D may play a protective role in cancers broadly, and skin cancer specifically.

• Decreases environmental damage: As an antioxidant, topical vitamin D can also fight the damaging environmental oxidants that cause premature aging.

How to Take/Apply It

When taking a vitamin D supplement take it along with a fatty meal of healthy fats, for best absorption.

If you choose to use a topical vitamin D for anti-aging, combining it with other antioxidant vitamins, growth factors, or retinoids can create a “super” product, working on multiple anti-aging pathways.

Does a vitamin D deficiency contribute to acne?

Studies have shown that those with acne saw improvement after increasing vitamin D intake. But, always check with your physician and discuss any supplements or vitamins before adding them to your regimen.

Can you take too much vitamin D?

Yes. Among other side effects, taking too much vitamin D can cause a buildup of calcium content in the blood.1

Does vitamin D make skin glow?

Vitamin D can help improve skin conditions like psoriasis and acne, potentially resulting in clearer, brighter skin.

Collagen

Your Complete Guide to Collagen in Skincare

In beauty, buzzwords often get tossed around but one of the buzziest, especially when it comes to skin aging, is collagen.

You’ve probably heard of it or maybe you’ve even taken it by means of supplements or applied it on your face with a serum or moisturizer mixed with collagen.
In both cases, it’s important to note that not all collagen products are created equal. While it’s long and time taking process of anti-aging regimens, depending on what kind—and how you use it—it may not live up to your expectations.

When it comes to anything you’re going to put on your skin, and invest in, it’s important to educate yourself on what collagen is, why it’s one of the most hyped elements of skincare and what to look for when adding it to your skincare routine.

Let’s break it down.

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body, found in connective tissues like tendons and ligaments. It’s also the main structural protein in the skin, making up 75% to 80% of the dermis (the second layer of skin) which is where most of your collagen is found—and also where it’s produced. Production happens when skin cells—known as fibroblasts—synthesize the collagen that holds the rest of the dermis together, giving skin its underlying structure.

How does collagen effect skin?

Without collagen, the skin would have the same texture as a leather bag. In other words, we need it to keep our skin looking supple, lifted and smooth. When everything is working as it should, our bodies have cellular collagen-making machines called fibroblasts that synthesize new collagen. The bad news is, we start to lose collagen around age 18 because our bodies are not producing it at the same rate. By age 30, it takes a dive, losing an average of 1% a year of our stored collagen, which leads to a loss of skin elasticity, firmness and suppleness.

Beyond age, there are other factors that cause the breakdown of our existing collagen, also known as fragmenting. Some of the biggest contributors are UV rays, pollution, smoking and stress which cause highly reactive molecules known as free radicals. Over time, these free radicals can damage the skin, leading to chronic inflammation, which, in turn, can cause oxidative stress which leads to collagen fragmentation.

The most effective way to compensate for our eventual drop in collagen is by two ways.

First, protect the existing collagen that’s been stored in your dermis by using UV protection daily, even on cloudy days. This simple action helps prevent the breakdown of collagen from environmental stressors.

Second, use skincare actives to support the skin’s ability to produce collagen.

How does collagen benefit skin?

The most noticeable trait of skin rich with collagen is plump, lifted and smooth.
Essentially, when this protein is stored in the skin at high levels, the more radiant, healthy and younger you’ll look.

How to use collagen in your skincare routine?

These can be added to your skincare regime to add along with serum or moisturizer or can be taken separately as supplementation.

Beta Hydroxy Acid

Why is Chemical exfoliation a game changer?

You’ve been doing
the classic skincare routine: cleanse, tone, and then moisturize. But still, it feels like your skin is still in need of a boost in the “glow department”.

You might be missing out on one thing and that is exfoliation.

While it’s true that our skin naturally exfoliates dead skin cells on a daily basis, it starts to need some help over time. As we get older, our skin’s ability to exfoliate and renew itself slows down and it may even stop completely. This can happen due to a number of things like genetics, too much sun exposure, and simply aging.

BHA or Beta Hydroxy Acid is your oil-loving acid that goes deeper into your skin pores. It tackles clogged oil and dead skin cells in the lower layers of the skin which means BHAs are best for those with oily and acne-prone skin — bye-bye blackheads and whiteheads!

They have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties too so BHAs can also be a great calming agent for sensitive skin that’s prone to redness (rosacea) and bumps like milia.

A well-loved BHA is salicylic acid. This is your bacteria-fighting BHA and it’s also used to treat calluses and dry areas of the skin. In more potent doses, salicylic acid is also used as a treatment for warts. Be careful not to overdo this one.

Another popular choice of BHA is citric acid which helps control excess oil and helps in skin rejuvenation too.

At the center of your being, you want to be seen in the world as you – the glowing, radiant, confident, beautiful being that you already are.
You see beauty, throughout your life, and over the course of your upbringing, society, social conditioning, and thousands of companies, products, and media outlets have told you that you are not ‘good enough.’
They have sold you ‘unhappiness’ by insisting that your height, weight, dress size, and the image you see in the mirror determine your self-worth, status, and what you can accomplish in life.
So never focus on how much weight you think you need to lose –or gain– or which parts of your body you need to change but feel AWESOME from the INSIDE OUT.
